This week I did a talk on ‘Strategies for Micro Breweries in Ireland’. At the moment we are seeing some closures but this is more than balanced by new entrants to the market. Some of the brewers doing very well are the ones that have carved out a very strong local niche. A good illustration is in a snippet of a story from White Gypsy Brewery in Tempelmore, County Tipperary. The brewery founder Cuilan Loughnane describes how the consumption habits of a strongly traditional town nearby have moved from all mainstream established brands 10 years ago to today where over 40% of all beer consumed comes from White Gypsy.
As Cuilan says, if it can be done in a traditional, hurling mad Tipperary town like Borrisoleigh, it can be done anywhere !
They do brew some seriously good beers – I particularly like their harvest ale at the moment.
